Albanius, former student
former student and correspondent of Libanius|Antioch
Albanius is known only as the recipient of a handful of letters from Libanius, the prominent fourth-century AD sophist and rhetorician of Antioch. The designation 'former student' marks him as one of the many pupils who passed through Libanius's celebrated school of rhetoric before scattering into careers across the eastern Roman provinces, with whom the teacher maintained correspondence. Beyond what these letters imply, nothing certain is attested about his offices, dates, or career; he is best understood as a minor member of Libanius's wide epistolary network, probably active in the Greek-speaking East in the second half of the fourth century AD.
