Euthymius
deacon
Euthymius is known only as a recipient of spiritual direction from Nilus of Ancyra, in whose letter collection he appears seven times within the early-5th-century Ancyran (Galatian) monastic milieu. He is addressed under several titles across the letters - deacon, monk, and bishop - and Nilus writes to him almost exclusively on the ascetic life: persevering through the assaults and temptations of demons after choosing 'stillness and withdrawal,' guarding the mind against distraction during prayer, attaining dispassion (apatheia), and, in his capacity as a cleric, abstaining from coarse jesting, gluttony, and unrestrained laughter. The relationship is that of a revered teacher encouraging and admonishing a junior ascetic and churchman; beyond these letters of counsel Euthymius is otherwise unattested.
