Frankish Clergy

bishop|Gaul
Not an individual person but a collective label aggregating bishops and clergy of Frankish Gaul who appear as senders or recipients in the Merovingian-era letter collection (the MGH Epistolae Merowingici et Karolini Aevi). The Frankish church of the sixth and seventh centuries was organized around episcopal sees such as Tours, Lyon, Reims, Arles, and Paris, and its bishops were central figures in correspondence on doctrine, church discipline, royal politics, and diplomacy under the Merovingian kings. Because this entry merges many distinct ecclesiastics under one heading, no single biography, birth or death date, or individual see can be assigned to it; it should be understood as a grouping of Gallic clergy rather than a named historical figure.
