Libertinus, Præfect

praetor (governor) of Sicily, correspondent of Gregory the Great|Sicily
Libertinus was a Roman administrative official addressed as praefectus (more precisely, the praetor or governor) of Sicily around the turn of the seventh century. He is known chiefly as a recipient of letters from Pope Gregory the Great (papacy 590-604), who corresponded with him about the administration of justice on the island and the management of the Church's extensive Sicilian patrimony, of which Gregory was an attentive overseer. Beyond his role in this correspondence he is little attested, and details of his career, family, and dates are not securely established; the name Libertinus was common in late antiquity, so caution is warranted in distinguishing him from other bearers of the name.
