Theodelinda

Queen of the Lombards|570-628 AD|Monza
Theodelinda (c. 570-628) was a Bavarian princess who became queen of the Lombards, first as wife of King Authari and then, after his death in 590, of his successor Agilulf, whom she chose as her new husband and co-ruler. A devout Catholic in a kingdom largely Arian and pagan, she worked to draw the Lombards toward Nicene Christianity and corresponded with Pope Gregory the Great, who addressed several letters to her urging her influence over her husband and the religious upbringing of their son. She founded the basilica of San Giovanni Battista at Monza, near Milan, endowing it with treasures including the famed Iron Crown of Lombardy, and her piety and political skill made her one of the most consequential royal women of early medieval Italy.

How your Excellency has laboured earnestly and kindly, as is your wont, for the conclusion of peace we have learned from the report of our son, the abbot Probus. Nor indeed was it otherwise to be expected of your Christianity than that you would in all ways skew your assiduity and goodness in the cause of peace. Wherefore we give thanks to Almig...

The letters which you sent us a little time ago from the Genoese parts have made us partakers of your joy on account of our learning that by the favour of Almighty God a son has been given you, and, as is greatly to your Excellency's credit, has been received into the fellowship of the Catholic faith . Nor indeed was anything else to be supposed...
