Visigothic Court

court|Toledo
"Visigothic Court" is a collective designation for the royal court and chancery of the Visigothic Kingdom, which ruled Hispania and Septimania from the fifth through the early eighth century, with Toledo as its principal seat from the reign of Leovigild (568-586). Rather than a single individual, this entry represents the kings, courtiers, and royal officials who appear as senders and recipients in the Epistulae Wisigothicae, a small collection of about twenty letters preserving diplomatic, ecclesiastical, and administrative correspondence between the Visigothic monarchy, Frankish rulers, and Iberian bishops. The court was the political center of a Catholic kingdom after Reccared's conversion from Arianism in 587, and its letters illuminate royal diplomacy, the appointment of bishops, and relations with the Merovingian Franks across the Pyrenees. As a chancery entity, it has no birth or death dates; its activity spans roughly the sixth and seventh centuries until the Umayyad conquest of 711.
