Letter 20

UnknownGundobad of Burgundians|c. 512 AD|avitus vienne
From: Avitus, bishop of Vienne
To: King Gundobad of the Burgundians
Date: ~512 AD
Context: Avitus answers a theological question Gundobad posed at a recent council about a difficult point of Christology, demonstrating how he served as the king's personal theological consultant.

Bishop Avitus to the lord King Gundobad.

Returning from the city of Lyon, where he had remained after we left the council to attend to some private business, the holy bishop Cartenius reported that you had put a question to him — or rather to all of us. If it had been raised while we were still present, the Holy Spirit would have readily supplied the relevant responses to your inquiry. But since we must not defraud so holy a concern with any delay in our answer, and since I know that by Christ's favor my position agrees with the judgment of my brother bishops, I undertake to respond through this letter.

[The letter continues with a careful theological argument addressing the king's question. Gundobad, though an Arian, regularly engaged Avitus in theological discussion, and Avitus used these opportunities to make the case for Catholic orthodoxy. The letter reveals the unusual dynamic of a Catholic bishop serving as intellectual counselor to an Arian king — a relationship that required both doctrinal firmness and diplomatic tact.]
