friendship
From: Avitus, bishop of Vienne
To: Arigius, vir illustrissimus
Date: ~507 AD
Context: Avitus expresses regret at missing a church dedication and praises the building work Arigius has undertaken for a patron saint's shrine.

Bishop Avitus to the most illustrious Arigius.

I know with what devoted affection you wished me to come to our shared feast. But you should have expected me only as someone who would rejoice with you, not as someone who could contribute anything. For since bishops both great in merit and numerous in attendance have come to serve you fittingly and eagerly, I alone suffer the loss of not deserving to be present at the joys of our special patron. Had my presence been granted according to my desire, I would have joined all who praised so great a work — a work whose sublime construction, once every part of the building had been inspected, could properly be celebrated in worthy words.

[The letter continues with Avitus's description of and enthusiasm for the new church building, offering praise for its architecture and the devotion it represents.]
