To Eulogius, Alexander, and Harpocration, bishops of Egypt, in exile.

In all things we discover that the providence of our good God over His churches is mighty. Even the things that seem gloomy, and do not turn out as we would wish, are ordained for the benefit of most people through God's hidden wisdom and His unsearchable righteous judgments.

The Lord has removed you from Egypt and established you in the midst of Palestine -- just as He once carried Israel into captivity in Assyria and there extinguished idolatry through the presence of His saints. So too now: the Lord is making your struggle for true religion known, opening through your exile an arena for your blessed contests, and giving all who witness your noble constancy the gift of your example to lead them toward salvation.

By God's grace, I have heard of the soundness of your faith and your zeal for the brothers -- how you provide what is profitable and necessary for salvation with neither carelessness nor indifference, and how you support everything that builds up the churches.

I have therefore thought it right to enter into communion with you and to write. I have sent my dear brother the deacon to convey my greetings and to bring me a firsthand report of your circumstances. May the Lord preserve you for His churches and grant you the reward of your endurance.
