Letter 23

UnknownSenarius, an man (a Roman official at Burgundian court)|c. 511 AD|ennodius pavia
From: Ennodius, deacon in Pavia
To: Senarius
Date: ~512 AD
Context: A letter arguing that affection loses its strength when weakened by silence.

Ennodius to Senarius.

Affection loses its vigor when debilitated by silence. The heart that is not exercised through correspondence grows weak, just as a muscle unused grows stiff. I write to you as therapy — for both of us.

Do not let the bond between us atrophy. A letter from you would restore what silence has begun to erode. Farewell.

Modern English rendering for readability. See the 19th-century translation or original Latin/Greek for scholarly use.
