Letter 11039

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Romanus, defender [in Sicily]
Date: ~601 AD
Context: Gregory commends the newly appointed defender Vitus and asks Romanus to help him get established.

Gregory to Romanus, defender.

Vitus has been appointed defender for his area of Sicily and is beginning his new responsibilities. He is capable, but new to the role and to the region.

I ask you to help him get established — to share your knowledge of the local situation, to introduce him to the people and procedures he needs to know, and to be available to advise him in the early period of his assignment.

This is what experienced administrators do for their successors and colleagues. It serves the church's interests that new administrators get up to speed quickly rather than spending months learning by trial and error.
