Letter 11071

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Anthemius, subdeacon
Date: ~601 AD
Context: Gregory rebukes those who were judges in the case of the deacon John, for having failed to examine the charges against the subdeacon Hilarus properly.

Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon.

The way the case of the deacon John was handled — specifically regarding the failure to properly examine the charges against the subdeacon Hilarus — is not acceptable. The judges in this case failed in their responsibility.

A proper examination of charges requires actually investigating them. It is not sufficient to hear one party's account and proceed on that basis without examining the evidence and hearing from relevant witnesses. Justice requires more than this.

I am directing that the case be reviewed properly. Any decisions that were made on the basis of an inadequate examination are subject to reconsideration.

Do not repeat this error.
