Letter 11125

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Bonifatius, defender [in Corsica]
Date: ~601 AD
Context: Gregory directs Bonifatius to see to the election of bishops for the churches of Aleria and Ajaccio in Corsica as soon as possible.

Gregory to Bonifatius, defender of Corsica.

The churches of Aleria and Ajaccio in Corsica are without bishops. This needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. A church without a bishop is not fully a church; the sacramental and pastoral ministry requires episcopal leadership.

Facilitate the election process in both communities. Help them identify suitable candidates, conduct the necessary investigation, and bring the elections to completion. Then report to me so that the ordinations can proceed.

Time matters here. Every month a church is without a bishop, the community drifts a little and the faith weakens a little.
