Letter 12027

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Quertinus, Former Prefect
Date: ~602 AD
Context: Gregory again explains why he cannot intervene on behalf of Bonitus who seeks the prefecture

Quertinus, I understand you are pressing me again on the matter of Bonitus and the prefecture. My position has not changed, and I want to explain it clearly once more. It is not appropriate for the bishop of Rome to be lobbying the imperial administration on behalf of candidates for civil administrative positions. This is not the role of this see, and engaging in it would compromise the independence and credibility that the apostolic office requires. I wish Bonitus well, but I cannot advocate for him in this way. Please accept this explanation and seek support for him through more appropriate channels.
