Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Eutychius, bishop [of Tyndaris or another Sicilian see]
Date: ~593 AD
Context: A second letter urging the bishop to persevere in converting idol worshippers, with additional instructions about a praetor.
Gregory to Eutychius, bishop.
I write again to encourage your work of conversion. The progress you have reported is real and significant. Do not let the remaining resistance discourage you; the conversion of a deeply rooted practice always takes longer than one would like.
On the matter of the praetor you described: my direction is that you approach him with patience and respect. A civil official who is resistant to the church's work is more effectively won over by consistent evidence of the church's good faith than by confrontation. Show him by your actions what the church actually does, and give him time to form his own assessment.
