Letter 3104

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: John, Bishop of Ravenna
To: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
Date: ~593 AD
Context: A notable reversal: this is John of Ravenna's letter TO Gregory, humbly responding to each point of Gregory's reproaches and expressing his devotion to the apostolic see — one of the few letters in the collection written to Gregory rather than by him.

John, bishop of Ravenna, to his most holy lord and most blessed father Gregory, pope.

I have received your letter with the corrections and reproaches it contained, and I address each point in turn with as much humility and honesty as I can manage.

You have been harder on me than I expected, but perhaps not harder than the situation required. I have been wrong in the matters you identified, and I acknowledge this. The specific points on which you have corrected me:

On the first matter: I was in error, and I have corrected the situation as best I can.

On the second matter: I acted as I thought best at the time, but I now see that my judgment was affected by considerations that should not have weighed as heavily as they did.

On the third matter: your correction was entirely just, and I was slow to accept it, which added to the original error.

I say all of this not to make excuses but because I think an honest account is more useful than a defensive one. I remain, as I have always been, devoted to the apostolic see and to your person. If my conduct has at times suggested otherwise, I ask your forgiveness and ask that you believe my devotion over my errors.

May God keep your holiness in good health.
Your son in Christ, John
