Letter 4022

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Constantius, Bishop
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory asks Constantius to keep Venantius, bishop of Luni, within the clergy

I must ask you to use your influence to keep Venantius, bishop of Luni, in his proper place within the clergy. I have heard reports suggesting he may be considering a withdrawal that would not be in the best interests of his community or his own vocation. A bishop does not take up his charge and then lay it down when it becomes inconvenient; the pastoral responsibility he has accepted is not revocable at will. Please speak with him, understand what is driving these thoughts, and help him see his way through to a more settled commitment. Let me know what you find.
