Letter 4040

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Maximianus, Bishop of Syracuse
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Maximianus to set aside a quarter of new revenues according to canon law

Brother, I must remind you that the canonical requirement regarding revenues applies to new income just as it does to established revenues: a quarter of what the church receives is to be set aside for the support of the poor and for the maintenance of the clergy. This is not optional and not subject to the bishop's personal discretion. Whatever new revenues your church has begun receiving, ensure that this division is being made correctly. If you have been handling this differently, correct the practice going forward and report to me what has been done.
