Letter 4044

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Maximianus, Bishop of Syracuse
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory orders Maximianus to send back to Bishop Bacauda the clergy from his diocese who were ordained in Sicily

Some clergymen who properly belong to the diocese of Bishop Bacauda have been ordained to holy orders here in Sicily, and they must be returned to their proper bishop. The ordination of clergy belonging to another bishop without his knowledge or consent is a serious irregularity, and I will not allow it to persist. Send these men back to Bacauda and let him determine how to place them within his own diocese. The integrity of diocesan boundaries depends on bishops respecting each other's jurisdictions, and this see takes that principle seriously.
