Letter 4104

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, bishop [of Corinth or another important see]
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory addresses a bishop John who follows a notorious predecessor Anastasius, urging him to govern well enough to make people forget their bad experience.

Gregory to John, bishop.

You have inherited a difficult situation: you follow Anastasius, whose governance was remembered badly. The people who experienced his tenure carry that memory, and it shapes how they approach their new bishop.

This is both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is obvious — you must overcome inherited suspicion and distrust. The opportunity is that even modest improvement over what came before will be experienced as a great relief.

My advice: govern well. Be present to your people. Be accessible to the poor. Be honest in your dealings. Address injustice when you find it. Maintain the liturgical life of your church with care.

Do these things consistently, and in time the memory of Anastasius will fade and be replaced by the reality of your own governance. People want their bishop to be good; they will gratefully embrace evidence that he is.
