Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
Gregory to Basilius.
Our heart greatly rejoices with your Magnificence, because we find you so zealous in your actions that you gain both glory among men and the rewards of merit before Almighty God. Among the other praiseworthy things you do, we have learned — both from the testimony of many and now fully from the report of our representatives — how the fervor of your love once kindled you against the schism of the Istrians [supporters of the Three Chapters schism in northeastern Italy] in defense of the unity of the Church. Therefore we pray the mercy of our Redeemer that His grace may support you in all things, and that He may grant you to fulfill in deed what He has granted you to desire.
Since in this matter the rewards of recompense increase in proportion to the effort of labor, we greet you with fatherly affection and urge you that, when you find a fitting opportunity, you should exert your effectiveness all the more earnestly, and strive with every effort by whatever means possible, so that — with the Lord's help — you may fulfill your commendable desire for the return of those who have gone astray.
As for the bearer of this letter, our notary Castorius [a papal secretary frequently sent on missions to northern Italy], whom we have sent for certain matters in Italy, may your Magnificence endeavor to assist him with every support, that you may multiply your own good works.
May Almighty God guard and protect you with your children and your whole household from every adversity by His protection, and grant you both prosperity in this present life and the joy of the life to come.
