Letter 5099

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Virgilius, Bishop of Arles
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory grants Virgilius his vicarious authority in Childebert's kingdom — Book 5 version.

Gregory to Virgilius, bishop of Arles.

I am confirming the delegation of my vicarious authority in the kingdom of Childebert that I described in my earlier letter. The same terms and responsibilities apply.

Use this authority in the service of the church's genuine interests: the correction of simony, the quality of episcopal appointments, the maintenance of canonical order. Not for personal aggrandizement or to settle scores, but for the genuine good of the Frankish church.

Report to me when significant actions are taken or decisions made.
Gregory
