Letter 5104

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, bishop [of Corinth or another important see]
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory tells Bishop John he should govern his church so well that people forget the notoriety of his predecessor Anastasius — Book 5 version.

Gregory to John, bishop.

I return to the counsel I gave you previously: the way to overcome the shadow of your predecessor is simply to govern well over time. There is no shortcut.

Be present. Be just. Be accessible. Let your actions demonstrate who you are and what your governance stands for. The people of your church want to trust their bishop; give them evidence that their trust is warranted.

Gregory
