Letter 5109

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Gaudentius, bishop [of Nola]
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory delegates to Gaudentius the visitation of the church of Capua — Book 5 version.

Gregory to Gaudentius, bishop.

The situation of the church of Capua continues to require outside oversight. I am again delegating to your fraternity the responsibility for its visitation.

Visit, observe, correct where needed within your authority as a visitor, and report to me. The goal remains the improvement of the church's condition, not the imposition of outside authority for its own sake.

I trust your judgment in this. Do what the situation requires and let me know what you find.
Gregory
