Letter 9013

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, Bishop of Syracuse [Sicily]
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Bishop John to appoint judges for a case involving the church's land agents (actores) and the priest Felix.

Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse.

A dispute has arisen involving the church's land agents [actores — the officials who managed the church's agricultural estates] and the priest Felix. This matter requires impartial judges who will examine it honestly and render a fair verdict.

I direct you to appoint such judges without delay. The selection of judges is crucial: they must have no stake in the outcome and no relationship with either party that would compromise their impartiality. Take this seriously.

Once the judges are appointed and the case is heard, report the result to me.
Gregory
