Gregory to Anatolius, Deacon in Constantinople.

Good and devoted servants deserve a response that doubles what I would offer freely -- because in responding to their faithfulness, I am paying a debt.

Our son the magnificent Marcellinus, who carries this letter, has conducted himself admirably in the case of our brother and fellow bishop Maximus and in the matter of the Istrians [bishops involved in the "Three Chapters" schism]. He is eager to continue working for the benefit of our Church.

I urge your Love to work closely with him when he arrives in Constantinople -- with complete commitment and energy. Give him every assistance in your power, so that with the help of Almighty God and your support, he faces fewer obstacles there. Treat him as one of our own. Show him the full effectiveness of your charity, so that he sees a return on his past service and has every reason to be hopeful about the future.

One more thing: I understand the Emperor had ordered Marcellinus to report to him immediately. You should find an appropriate moment to explain that it was not disobedience that delayed him, but the case of our brother Maximus -- which, though late, has through his efforts finally been resolved.

And this I particularly want you to heed: do not allow yourself to become entangled in any case involving the oppression of the poor. Do not let pressure from powerful people push you into doing something that would harm your soul.
