Letter 9104

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Fortunatus, Bishop of Naples
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory orders Fortunatus to protect Christian slaves that Basil the Jew claims to own

I must address a matter of both justice and pastoral urgency. It has been reported to us that Basil, a Jew of Naples, is claiming ownership of Christian slaves — people who have received baptism and cannot by law be held as slaves by those of another faith. This is an old law and a just one: the Christian faith changes a person's status before God and, consequently, before civil law as well. I am directing you to investigate these claims, identify the individuals involved, and secure their freedom if the law has been violated. Handle the matter with care but with firmness. No Christian is to be left in bondage to a master who has no right to them.
