Gregory to Theoderic and Theodebert, Kings of the Franks.

Since the renown of your kingdom has long outshone all others through the grace of the Christian religion, you should take the greatest care to please the Almighty Lord all the more perfectly in that very thing which makes you more glorious than other nations -- the God who grants health and prosperity to kings, and who has made the faith you observe beneficial to you in every way.

Most excellent sons, I had wished to send you nothing but friendly greetings, to show my fatherly affection through words of charity. But a deeply troubling matter forces me to speak plainly as well. Listen carefully: what I say concerns your kingdom's wellbeing.

It is reported that simoniacal heresy [the buying and selling of church offices] -- the very first corruption the devil planted against God's Church, struck down at its first appearance by the weapon of apostolic vengeance -- is flourishing within your borders. Faith and good conduct should be the criteria for choosing priests.

Where good conduct is absent, faith carries no weight. As the blessed James says, "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). But what works can come from a priest who bought his sacred office with a bribe? The result is predictable: men seeking ordination make no effort to improve their lives. Instead, they busy themselves accumulating wealth to purchase sacred dignity. Meanwhile, the innocent and the poor shrink from ordination because they are shut out and looked down on. Where gold is what matters, vice becomes acceptable.

I urge you with the authority of the Apostolic See: this must end. The planting of the devil must be torn out by the roots before it spreads further. See to it that bishops are chosen for their holiness and learning, not their money. Call a synod, investigate, and correct. And when you have acted, report to me what has been done. Your kingdom's glory before God depends on it.
