Letter 9154

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Callinicus, Exarch of Italy
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory thanks God that the area near the Slavs has been pacified, and notes that Capri island is in better condition

Praise be to God for the news you have sent me. The pacification of the territory near the Slavs is a relief beyond measure — the pastoral losses we have sustained in those regions from their incursions have been grievous, and every settlement that returns to peace is a cause for genuine rejoicing. I am also glad to hear the better news from Capri. The island's troubles had been a source of particular concern to me. I pray that the calm holds, and I thank you for your role in securing it. The Church in Italy owes more to your military efforts than she is sometimes able to express.
