Letter 9216

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Virgilius, Bishop of Arles
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory orders Virgilius to uphold the monastery of Arles, whose privileges were established by King Childebert

Brother, the monastery near Arles whose privileges were established by the piety of the late King Childebert must be protected from any encroachment — whether by ecclesiastical authorities who forget that such privileges are binding, or by secular powers who do not respect what has been granted. I am asking you to affirm these privileges formally, to record your confirmation, and to make clear to anyone who asks that this see stands behind them. The patronage of Christian kings for monasteries is a gift to the whole Church, and it is not ours to revoke.
