Letter 9239

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Talitanus, Administrator of the Public Patrimony
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory warns against concealing Church revenues

We have learned that you have been placed in charge of the public patrimony, and we count on your diligence to serve justice honestly. But I must speak plainly: word has reached us that revenues properly belonging to the Roman Church are being concealed or diverted. This cannot be permitted. I urge you in the strongest terms to render to the Church what is the Church's. Let no fear of earthly power lead you to rob the poor of God — for the resources of this Church feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and redeem the captive. I trust you will correct whatever irregularities exist without further prompting from this see.
