Letter 1532

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: Apocras the Sophist
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Brief exhortation to detach from earthly goods and hold only what lasts.

Let us hold only to those possessions of which we will have need after departing this life. The rest, let us treat with contempt. The man who learns to live without what he cannot take with him has already arrived.

Modern English rendering for readability. See the 19th-century translation or original Latin/Greek for scholarly use.
