Letter 1550

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: Zosimus the Presbyter
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore rebukes a presbyter who has not only refused to help the poor but made their condition worse.

If you are unwilling to heal anything, and actually deepen the wounds of the poor — what more terrible battle are you creating for those already fighting against the hard-to-cure and hard-to-fight beast of poverty? The alms that the merciful provide for their sustenance, you remove.

I say this plainly: the priest who enriches himself while the poor in his care go hungry has not only failed in his duty — he has actively done harm. The one who can see a wound and does not close it is not neutral; he is complicit. What excuse will you give when asked to account for those you were placed there to tend?
