Letter 15

Hilary of RomeUnknown|pope hilary
From: Pope Hilary, bishop of Rome
To: The bishops of various provinces of Gaul
Date: ~463 AD
Context: Pope Hilary's letter 8; a circular letter to multiple Gallic bishops on the question of episcopal jurisdiction, specifically addressing who has authority over the diocese of Narbonne.

Hilary, bishop of Rome, to our beloved brothers the bishops of the various provinces of Gaul, greetings.

We write on a matter of ecclesiastical jurisdiction that has come to our attention and that requires a clear determination.

The question of the presidency over the church of Narbonne has been disputed. We hereby determine: the church of Narbonne is to continue under the presidency established by previous arrangements, which remains in effect. The attempt by certain parties to unilaterally alter the established jurisdiction is contrary to the canons and is not to be repeated.

At the same time, we address a related matter: the right of ordination of bishops in the province in question. The metropolitan's authority over episcopal ordinations in his province is well established and is to be respected by all parties. Ordinations conducted without the metropolitan's participation are irregular and cannot be recognized as valid.

We ask all the bishops addressed by this letter to acknowledge its contents and to govern themselves accordingly.

Hilary, bishop of Rome
