Letter 19

Hilary of RomeUnknown|pope hilary
From: Pope Hilary, bishop of Rome
To: Leontius, Veranius, and Victorius, bishops
Date: ~465 AD
Context: Pope Hilary's letter 12; Hilary delegates to three bishops the handling of a disputed situation involving the bishops Ingenuus and Fluvianus.

Hilary, bishop of Rome, to our beloved brothers Leontius, Veranius, and Victorius, greetings.

The dispute between Ingenuus and Fluvianus has been before us for some time, and we have determined that the most efficient way to address it is to delegate its investigation and resolution to the three of you, who are close enough to the situation to investigate it thoroughly and whose authority as bishops is sufficient to bring about a resolution that will stick.

The charge against Ascanius — that what was obtained from him was done through misrepresentation — is one that must be investigated carefully. If the charge is proven, whatever was secured through misrepresentation is void.

We ask you to conduct the investigation with the care and impartiality the situation requires, to communicate the relevant findings to all parties, and to report to us when the matter has been resolved. Whatever determination you reach through proper process, we will support.

Hilary, bishop of Rome
