Desiderius

correspondent of Jerome, Paulinus of Nola, and Gregory the Great (likely several distinct men of the same name)
Desiderius was an exceedingly common name in late antiquity, and this record almost certainly conflates several distinct correspondents who happen to share it: the collections span Jerome and Paulinus of Nola (late 4th to early 5th century) on one side and Gregory the Great (late 6th century) on the other, periods too far apart for one person to bridge. In Jerome's and Paulinus's circle, a Desiderius (and his wife Serenilla) appears as a devout layman of southern Gaul, the recipient of Jerome's Epistle 47 and an associate of the ascetic networks around Nola; among Gregory the Great's correspondents, a Desiderius surfaces as a Gallic bishop, most plausibly Desiderius of Vienne, whom Gregory famously rebuked for teaching classical grammar and the pagan poets. Beyond these glimpses the individual figures are thinly attested, known chiefly as addressees within the correspondence itself. Because the underlying records merge more than one person, no single set of dates, offices, or biography can responsibly be assigned to 'Desiderius' as listed here.

It is possible but not probable that this Desiderius is the same with Desiderius of Aquitaine, who afterwards induced Jerome to write against Vigilantius. An interval of seven years separates this letter (of which the date is 3...
