Gaianus, a lawyer
lawyer; correspondent of Libanius|Antioch
Otherwise little attested; known chiefly as a correspondent of the rhetorician Libanius of Antioch (314 to c. 393 AD), who addressed several surviving letters to him. He is identified in the correspondence as a lawyer (advocate), and so was probably a legal professional active in or around Antioch in Syria in the later fourth century, within the milieu of Libanius's students, friends, and provincial contacts. No independent biographical details (dates, specific offices, family) are securely known beyond what the letters imply, and the name Gaianus is borne by more than one person in Libanius's circle, so caution is warranted in attributing a fuller career to him.
