Honoratus, of Salona

archdeacon of Salona (correspondent of Gregory the Great)|Salona (Solin), Dalmatia
Honoratus appears as a recipient in the Roman Letters corpus chiefly in connection with Salona, the late-antique capital of Dalmatia (modern Solin, near Split, Croatia). The best-attested figure of this name and place is the archdeacon Honoratus of Salona, who features prominently in the correspondence of Pope Gregory the Great (pope 590-604) during the contested episcopal succession at Salona in the 590s: Gregory repeatedly intervened to support Honoratus against the bishop Natalis and later Maximus. Beyond this Gregorian context, 'Honoratus' is a very common late-Roman name, and the spread of attributed letters across several distinct collections (Cassiodorus, Ennodius of Pavia, Cyprian of Carthage, Libanius) suggests this corpus record may aggregate more than one individual; apart from the Salonitan archdeacon, the other correspondents named Honoratus are otherwise little known and should not be assumed identical. Exact birth and death dates are not securely recorded.
