Johannes, Imperial Agent

imperial/administrative agent, correspondent of Cassiodorus and Ennodius|Ravenna
Otherwise little attested; known chiefly as the recipient of letters preserved in the Ostrogothic-era correspondence collections of Cassiodorus (the Variae) and Ennodius of Pavia, placing him in early sixth-century Italy. The name John (Johannes) was extremely common in late antiquity, and the surviving letters identify him only in connection with imperial or royal administrative service, so he cannot be securely matched to any of the better-known Johns of the period. His role is best understood as a functionary or agent active in the Italian administration of the Ostrogothic kingdom (c. 500-540 AD), probably operating in or around the court centers of Ravenna; beyond this the sources do not allow a fuller biography.
