Martinianus (correspondent of Isidore of Pelusium)

presbyter (priest)|Pelusium
Martinianus is known only as a correspondent of Isidore of Pelusium, addressed in one letter as "Martinianus the Presbyter" and elsewhere grouped under the heading "To the priests" alongside Zosimus, Maron, and Eustathius, placing him among the clergy of the early-to-mid 5th-century Pelusium milieu in the eastern Nile Delta. The letters to him are overwhelmingly corrective: Isidore writes to this circle of priests about scandalous and publicly notorious conduct, urging repentance, warning that their deeds have become a cause of grief to a holy man and of mockery among the people, and reproaching them for taking pride in what should shame them. One milder letter addressed to Martinianus alone reflects on bearing with the small faults of friends, suggesting Isidore at times engaged him individually on questions of Christian charity and forbearance. Beyond his role as a chastened presbyter in Isidore's correspondence he is otherwise unattested.
