Maurentius
correspondent of Gregory the Great (probably a magister militum in Italy)|Italy (Gregory's correspondence centered on Rome)
Maurentius is known chiefly as a recipient of letters in the Register of Gregory the Great (pope 590-604), the vast administrative correspondence through which Gregory governed the Roman Church and its estates during the wars and disruptions of late sixth-century Italy. He is most plausibly identified with the Maurentius who served as a magister militum (military commander) in Italy under Gregory, one of the imperial and military officials with whom the pope dealt over the defense of central Italy against the Lombards and the management of local affairs. Beyond his appearance in this correspondence he is not richly documented, and specific details of his career and dates are not securely known.
