Pope Hilary

pope|?-468 AD|Rome
Hilary (Hilarius) was bishop of Rome from 461 to 468, succeeding Leo the Great. A native of Sardinia, he had served as a deacon and was Leo's legate at the disastrous "Robber Synod" of Ephesus in 449, where he dramatically resisted the deposition of Flavian of Constantinople and fled to escape the violence. As pope he worked to consolidate papal authority and ecclesiastical discipline in Gaul and Spain, intervening in disputes over episcopal jurisdiction and metropolitan rights, and he reinforced Rome's primacy through a series of decretal letters. He also restored churches in Rome and built oratories at the Lateran baptistery.
