Stephanus, of Lyon
Gallo-Roman cleric (deacon) of Lyon; correspondent of Avitus of Vienne and Ruricius of Limoges|Lyon
Stephanus of Lyon was a Gallo-Roman cleric active in the late fifth and early sixth centuries, the era of the post-Roman Burgundian kingdom in southeastern Gaul. He is known as a correspondent within the tightly interconnected circle of Gallic bishops and aristocrats that included Avitus of Vienne and Ruricius of Limoges, whose surviving letters constitute much of our evidence for the Church and senatorial society of the period. He is generally identified with the deacon (and by some accounts later bishop) of Lyon of that name who features in this correspondence; beyond his role as a recipient of these letters and his place within the Lyon clergy, little independent detail about his career is securely attested.
