From: Avitus, bishop of Vienne
To: King Gundobad of the Burgundians
Date: ~500 AD
Context: Avitus explains why he transferred a servant from the Vienne basilica to the Lyon basilica for interrogation, carefully navigating the relationship between royal authority and church sanctuary rights.

Bishop Avitus to the lord King Gundobad.

That I sent the servant who was needed for questioning from the basilica of Vienne to that of Lyon under guard — this was manifestly an act of both respect and obedience. For just as I did not presume to hand him over here without the protection of sanctuary, so I arranged for him to be brought near enough for the interrogation that the hearing required. Since the same rule applies everywhere and the same impossibility — or possibility — for the protection of the common ministry governs us all, I did not treat the properties of the Lyon and Vienne basilicas as separate but the sanctity of both churches as one. This should make intercession easier rather than harder.
