friendshipillness
From: Avitus, bishop of Vienne
To: Valerianus, vir illustrissimus
Date: ~514 AD
Context: A brief Easter greeting celebrating Valerianus's safe return from a long absence.

Bishop Avitus to the most illustrious Valerianus.

Your devotion maintains its customary care, visiting us with your gracious attention and your letters alike. You have added to the feast day, which we joyfully celebrated with God's help, precisely what we had been hoping for — completing our celebration with the votive fulfillment of our worship. For my part, as I rejoice in your happiness to the extent I learn of it, it is no less sweet to hear of your safe return after so long an absence than to celebrate the paschal feast with exultation.
