Letter 223: Chrysostom writes first to Hesychius and asks for frequent letters about his health.

I wanted to receive a letter from your Kindness before I wrote first, for that would have been the clearest mark of a very ardent friend. But I did not wait for your letter. I leapt first into writing, showing even by this the warm love I have for your Kindness. Still, I thank you even for the delay. I know well that it came not from neglect but from your great modesty. Now show your love toward us freely. Send us showers of letters telling us about your health. If we receive such letters, even if we are carried to the very ends of the inhabited world, or to a place more desolate than this, we will draw great comfort from your love. Nothing so lifts the soul and sets it in joy as loving and being genuinely loved.

ΣΚΓʹ. Ἡσυχίῳ. Ἐγὼ μὲν ἐπεθύμουν καὶ μὴ γράψας πρὸς τὴν σὴν ἐμμέλειαν πρότερος δέξασθαι ἐπιστολήν· τοῦτο γὰρ μάλιστα ἐραστοῦ σφοδροτάτου· οὐκ ἀνεμείναμεν δὲ ἡμεῖς τὰ σὰ γράμματα, ἀλλὰ πρότεροι τῷ γράφειν ἐπεπηδήσαμεν, τὸν θερμὸν ἔρωτα, ὃν περὶ τὴν σὴν ἐμμέλειαν ἔχομεν, κἀν τούτῳ δεικνύντες. Πλὴν ἀλλὰ καὶ τούτου σοι χάριν ἴσμεν· εὖ γὰρ οἶδ' ὅτι οὐκ ἐξ ὀλιγωρίας, ἀλλ' ἐκ τοῦ σφόδρα μετριάζειν, τοῦτο πέπονθας. ∆είκνυε τοίνυν λοιπὸν μετὰ ἀδείας τὴν περὶ ἡμᾶς ἀγάπην, νιφάδας ἡμῖν πέμπων ἐπιστολῶν, δηλούσας τὰ περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς σῆς. Ἢν γὰρ τοιαῦτα δεξώμεθα γράμματα, κἂν πρὸς αὐτὰ τῆς οἰκουμένης ἀπενεχθῶμεν τὰ τέρματα, κἂν εἰς ἐρημότερον τούτου χωρίον, πολλὴν ἀπὸ τῆς ἀγάπης ὑμῶν καρπωσόμεθα τὴν παράκλησιν. Οὐδὲν γὰρ οὕτω ψυχὴν ἀνέχειν δύναται, καὶ ἐν πολλῇ καθιστᾷν ἡδονῇ, ὡς τὸ φιλεῖν καὶ φιλεῖσθαι γνησίως. Καὶ τοῦτο οἶσθα μάλιστα πάντων αὐτὸς, ἐπειδὴ μάλιστα πάντων καὶ φιλεῖν οἶσθα.
