Letter 10009

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, Bishop of Syracuse [Sicily]
Date: ~600 AD
Context: Gregory directs that ten pounds of gold be paid to the bishop Basil of Capua for the ransom of Cethegus and Flora.

Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse.

Ten pounds of gold are to be paid to the bishop Basil of Capua [for the ransom of captives — ransoming Christians taken by the Lombards was one of Gregory's most active pastoral commitments]. The captives to be ransomed are Cethegus and Flora.

Arrange this payment promptly. Two people's freedom depends on it. Captivity in Lombard hands was a desperate situation, and every day's delay in the ransom is a day longer in captivity.

Make the payment and confirm to me when it has been done.
Gregory
