Letter 11026

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Rusticiana, Patrician
Date: ~601 AD
Context: Gregory asks Rusticiana not to call herself his "servant" in letters; he acknowledges her gift of sails

You sent me a most generous gift of sails, and for this I am grateful — though you should not have put yourself to such expense on my account. But I must address something else: I have noticed that in your letters you refer to yourself as my servant. This you must stop. You are a woman of great dignity and standing in God's church, and to demean yourself before me in this way is to misunderstand both your rank and mine. We are both servants of the one Lord. Call me brother, or father if age warrants it, but let us not practice false humility that borders on the theatrical. Write to me as a friend writes to a friend.
