Gregory to Ethelbert, King of the English.

Almighty God raises good people to the governance of nations so that through them he may bestow the gifts of his loving-kindness on all who are placed under their care. This we have found to be the case with the nation of the English, over which your Glory has been set so that through the blessings granted to you, heavenly benefits might be conferred on your subjects.

Glorious son, guard with anxious care the grace you have received from above. Make haste to spread the Christian faith among the peoples under your rule. Increase your zeal for their conversion. Pull down the worship of idols. Overturn the structures of their temples. Build up the character of your subjects in great purity of life -- by urging, by warning, by encouraging, by correcting, by showing examples of good conduct. Then you will find your reward in heaven from him whose name and knowledge you have spread abroad on earth. He himself will make your name even more glorious to future generations, if you seek and uphold his honor among the nations.

Consider the example of Constantine, the most pious Emperor, who recalled the Roman Republic from the perverted worship of idols and brought it, together with himself and all his subjects, wholeheartedly to our Almighty Lord Jesus Christ. That man surpassed the fame of all ancient rulers and exceeded his predecessors as much in renown as in good deeds. Now let your Glory do the same: pour into the kings and peoples subject to you the knowledge of God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- that you may surpass the ancient kings of your nation in both reputation and merit.
