Letter 13021

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Bishops Venerius of Vibona and Stephanus
Date: ~603 AD
Context: Gregory writes that after the deaths of Bishops Paulinus of Tauriana and another, the survivors must handle the episcopal work

The deaths of your brother bishops Paulinus of Tauriana and his colleague have placed additional burdens on those of you who remain, and I write both to acknowledge this and to address it. The communities left without their bishops cannot wait indefinitely for replacements. I ask you, Venerius and Stephanus, to take pastoral responsibility for the vacant communities on a temporary basis, providing them with the sacraments and oversight they require while the process of finding proper successors proceeds. This is a heavy charge, I know, and I do not ask it without appreciation for your sacrifices. But the faithful must not suffer for lack of what you are able to provide.
